NEW NON-PROFIT FOUNDATION OFFERS EXPERT STATISTICAL SERVICES

TO SMALLER NON-PROFITS AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

BROOKLINE, MA; December 7, 2022 – A new non-profit foundation based in the Boston area has been organized to offer expert statistical support for smaller non-profits and local government agencies. Dorer Community Service Foundation (DCSF) provides pro bono statistical consulting, analysis and reporting services to facilitate grant requests and fundraising, and to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of programs and services.

“One of our goals is to help directors of development who know they need statistics to be effective, but who may not have experience using large databases – or the budget to pay for statistical services,” says DCSF founder and President David J. Dorer, Ph.D. “Knowing and understanding key economic, social and demographic characteristics about the communities they serve increases their chances of receiving needed funding through grant applications, while optimizing their use of time and funds,” he adds.

Dr. Dorer’s four decades of experience as a statistician in both academia and industry has focused on collaborating with researchers in a variety of medical fields to help plan, develop and evaluate programs such as grant-funded clinical trials. His combined experience in both the biotechnology industry and at the Massachusetts General Hospital Biostatistics Center has included supporting many successful grant applications to the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Dorer holds B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University and the NASA Ames Research Center.

“I long planned to volunteer by using my background in statistics and specialization in the medical field. Starting a nonprofit foundation allows me and others to accomplish more than we could alone by donating funds,” Dr. Dorer explains. To establish the 501(c)(3) non-profit, Dr. Dorer joined with Board members John Hebert, a former public relations professional as Treasurer, Colin McArdle M.D., a retired physician as Clerk, and Christine McArdle, Ph.D., as an Advisory Board member.

DCSF services include:

  • Helping design, collect, analyze and report on an organization’s survey data;

  •
  • Accessing and working with large public use databases, such as the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) as well as Housing and Urban Development, Federal Reserve and Bureau of Labor Statistics economic data; and

  •
  • Working with public health databases, such as the National Inpatient Sample (NIS), the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program (SEER) database, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and National Center for Health Statistics data.

Organizations currently receiving services include the Brookline Massachusetts Senior Center; a public school and a town public health department in the Boston area; and the Eleanor B. Rainey Memorial Institute in Cleveland, Ohio.

Commenting on their work with DCSF, Rainey Institute Executive Director Dr. Jennifer Harris said, “The Dorer Community Service Foundation has worked closely with Rainey’s fundraising team on a comprehensive analysis of our neighborhood population using the 2020 American Community Survey. The detailed demographic information and analysis that Dr. Dorer provided has been immensely helpful in our team’s story-telling, grant applications, and fundraising efforts.”
